Week 4

I was just about to give up on my book because it was boring me to death. For the first part of the book nothing really happens until Winston reveals that he was once married. After I read this part in the book I had to continue. Winston explains that he was married to a woman named Katherine who he did not love at all and he knew she did not love him. They only got married because in the world of Big Brother people do not get married because of love, they get married because it is their duty to create new comity leaders, which means they have to have children. Every time they tried to make a baby Winston would feel like Katherine was somehow forcing herself to go through with it. They tried once a week every week in the evening when Winston got home from work. She called making love “her duty to the comity”. Winston hated making love to her so he did something that most people would never do ever. He paid a hooker to have sex with him. When he and the woman were in the hotel room, he turned on a light and found that she was and older woman, about fifty years or so and he still went through with his plan.

                Winston asked for a divorce and Katherine left. He has no idea where she went, if they are still married, or if she is even alive. Winston could care less about Katherine now because he found a new woman that he is sure that he loves. Her name is Julia, and she has been sort of stalking Winston for a while. Winston actually thought she was a spy sent to follow him around and he was making plans to either kill her or himself or both. One day while he was at work she slipped him a note saying “I love you”, which made him very confused. They arranged to meet in the country where she had a hide out. When they met they talked and she told him how much she loved him and they made love. After that they made secrete arrangements to meet whenever possible without anyone noticing. If someone were to find out that they were together based on love they could both be killed. Winston wants to be with her more than anything in this world but he doesn’t know how to make sure they will be together. All he knows is that he does love her with all his heart and wants to call her his wife.

                I don’t like how these people can’t be together because they love each other.  If you love someone you should try to make sure that you will be together no matter what the cost is. I personally would hate to be with a man that I did not get along with, had no connection, or any feelings at all towards him. I believe that love is a gift that two people share together.
