Week 2- A Farewell to Arms

A Farewell to Arms
By: Ernest Hemingway
-Dylan Hatzenbuhler

In the story A Farewell to Arms; he starts the book out with Lieutenant Fredrick Henry, [the narrator] a young American ambulance driver in the Italian Army during World War I, explaining on the place he lives now.  It is summertime and he can hear the troops marching down the roads, and even a cars that may be carrying troops or the King to the battle.  Henry lives in a Italian Village during the war.

     A line from Henry:
  • "Their was fighting in the mountains and at night we could see the flashes from the artillery.  In the dark it was like summer lightning, but the night were cool and there was not the feeling of a storm coming."    [pg. 1]

I thought this was a great line that Henry could explain at night what the mountain side looked like. Another thing would be how great to see all the brave soldiers fighting for their country.

The next year; Henry's unit moves to Gorizia further from the fighting, which continues in the mountains.  Another thing is the Americans and Allies began to win and gained the victories across the South Plateau and we even won across the river in August.  I think it's awesome that Henry doesn't give up and keeps on going to help out as much as he can.

When Henry finally comes back home from the war, he discusses with his roommate Rinaldi.  Rinaldi is a surgeon and loves the woman.  He sets up Henry to go to the English hospital to get him to talk to this beautiful Blondie nurse named Catherine Barkley [English Nurse].

  1. I like how you incorperated a line from the book into your blog.

Are there only two characters that Henry talks about? Him and his roommate, or does he go into detail about any other characters?
